Biblical Women & Midrash: A Summer Study

Lots of places exist in Scripture where the names, voices, perspective, and contributions of women have been silenced or erased by male biblical writers themselves and centuries of ensuing (largely male) commentary. –from a review of Womanist Midrash.

This summer Pilgrim Congregational and First Christian will jointly offer a study based on Wilda Gafney’s book Womanist Midrash: A reintroduction to the Women of the Torah and the Throne. Midrash is a traditional Jewish way of filling in the blanks and expounding on a story in the Bible. A womanist approach is both black and feminist.

Offered on Tuesday evenings from July 9 to August 13 6:30-8pm, classes will take place at Pilgrim.  Each class is a stand-alone opportunity to learn and engage with the unknown stories of women in the Hebrew scriptures. Participants will use imagination and curiosity to understand these women in new and inspiring ways.

Rev. Jayne Hubbard and Rev. Allison Bright will join Rev. Katharine and our own Karen Tyler in leading the sessions.  The book is recommended but certainly not required.  Come for an evening of fellowship and a new perspective on the stories of the Bible.
